01 — The area
Concrete work in Humble
Humble started as an oil town. The field found here in 1904 gave its name to Humble Oil, the company that later became part of Exxon. Today the city itself is small, but the area people call Humble is much larger, taking in Atascocita, the neighborhoods along FM 1960 and the streets that run toward Lake Houston and the San Jacinto River.
Much of the housing went up from the 1980s onward, and a great deal of it in the last twenty years. That mix shows in the concrete. Older driveways have settled and cracked next to the garage, while newer subdivisions are full of homes that came with a small back slab and a yard of bare clay waiting for a real patio or a pool deck.
We take requests from Humble, Atascocita and the nearby parts of Kingwood and northeast Harris County. The contractor who calls you back works this side of Houston and knows the neighborhoods, the homeowner associations and how the ground behaves near the lake, the river and the creeks that cross the area.

Patios for yards that came with a small slab
Many Humble and Atascocita homes were sold with a small covered slab at the back door and not much else. Extending it into a usable patio is one of the most common requests on this side of town. The new section has to meet the old slab at the right height, with a joint or dowels that let the two pieces move without cracking each other.
Stamped and stained finishes are popular for these extensions, often with a lighter color out in the sun and a darker border under the roof line. On lots this flat, though, the slope away from the foundation matters more than the pattern. A beautiful patio that sends water to the back wall is a problem with a nice finish on top.

Driveways that dropped next to the garage
In the older Humble neighborhoods the most frequent complaint is a driveway that sank next to the garage, leaving a lip or a gap where water sits after every storm. It usually comes from fill that was placed loosely against the foundation decades ago, combined with roof water landing on the same few square feet.
When the panels are still in large pieces, leveling them back up and sealing the gap is usually faster and cheaper than tearing the driveway out. Moving the downspout that caused the problem a few feet away, or into a buried line, is the step that keeps the slab from dropping again next year.

Pool decks around Lake Houston
Pools are common across Atascocita and the neighborhoods near the lake, and so are pool decks that have cracked, sunk or pulled away from the coping. A sunken deck section can often be lifted back to the coping and the joint resealed; decks with many cracks and a worn surface are more often resurfaced or replaced with stamped concrete.
Around a pool, slip resistance matters as much as appearance. Ask for a textured pattern and an anti-slip additive in the sealer, keep the colors light so the deck stays walkable in July, and make sure the deck drains away from the pool rather than into it.

Wet ground after heavy storms
Parts of the Humble area lie close to the San Jacinto River, Lake Houston and the creeks that feed them, and neighborhoods here saw serious flooding during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Even well away from the water, the ground is flat and the clay drains slowly, so yards can stay soggy for days after a big storm.
For concrete that means drainage gets planned with every slab: surfaces sloped away from the house, downspouts led away from driveways and walkways, and joints sealed so water doesn't run under the concrete and soften the clay. These details cost little during a pour and a lot to add afterward.

HOAs and neighborhood rules
Many subdivisions in Atascocita and around Humble have association rules about driveway width, materials and decorative finishes that can be seen from the street. A driveway extension, a colored apron or a new front walkway may need approval before work starts, and some associations ask for a drawing and color samples.
Bring the rules to the estimate visit if you have them. A contractor who works here regularly will also know what local associations usually ask for, which saves a round of redesign and keeps the start date from slipping while you wait for an answer.

Questions
Humble — asked and answered
Do you cover Atascocita and Kingwood?
Yes. Requests from Atascocita, Kingwood and the nearby parts of northeast Harris County are handled the same way as addresses inside Humble.
Can the small slab behind my house be extended?
Yes. The new section is jointed or doweled to the old one, set at the right height and sloped away from the house so water doesn't collect at the back door.
My driveway has a gap at the garage. Does it need replacing?
Not necessarily. If the panel is still in one piece it can often be lifted and the joint sealed, together with fixing the roof water that caused it.
How soon can we use a new pool deck?
Foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two. The sealer goes on once the concrete has cured, and the deck is ready for normal use after that.
Is there a charge for the estimate?
No. The request and the estimate are free and carry no obligation.
